A New Workshop Dedicated to Dreaming

Carlos Castaneda’s Tensegrity

The Art of Dreaming
– Awake and Asleep –
with our Fellow Navigators,
the Whales….

November 27 & 28, 2010
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This workshop is dedicated to the memory of beloved Teacher, Artist, Friend and Amsterdam Tensegrity Practitioner Liesbeth Perdeck, who loved the whales.

The moment one begins dreaming awake, a world of enticing, unexplored possibilities opens up. A world where the ultimate audacity becomes a reality... That's the time when man's definitive adventure begins. The world becomes limitless with possibilities and wonder.

Being-in-Dreaming, by Florinda Donner-Grau

For the seers of ancient Mexico, “the art of dreaming” is the art of perceiving more than we believe is possible to perceive. Said another way: it is the art of traveling on a feature of the universe called the sea of awareness, to new ways of seeing and experiencing this world, as well as entire new worlds, as complete as our own.

We awaken the ‘dreamer’ when we begin acknowledging that the world of “solid” objects is based on a world of energy that is vibratory and aware, illuminated by a force of universal intelligence that don Juan Matus and the seers of his lineage called the intent of infinity, or the Spirit.

Dreaming, seers say, must be intended—meaning carried out in concert with intent, or Spirit –  and it begins with affection – affection for oneself, for others, for the world, and for the joyous experience of learning and being. This gives one enthusiasm to rally the energy needed for dreaming, the unbending purpose and discipline to sustain the dreaming attention, and the willingness to acquiesce to the designs of the Spirit. With this mood, one can intend, or dream, awake and asleep, one’s individual dreams as well as dreams shared with others.

For millennia, seers have considered our brothers and sisters of the ocean deep, the whales, to be a wonderful embodiment of this mood of the dreamer—the navigator on the sea of awareness. Their stories describe whales as beings who navigate in water that comes from the stars (astronomers now believe that water was brought to earth by meteor showers), and guided by the stars, they travel as the great historians, peace dreamers and trackers of the earth, singing to each other across thousands of undersea miles, awakening their memories and dreams with their calls. Scientists are now discovering more about how highly evolved they are:

“It is important to note …that sperm whales, killer whales and certainly humpback whales exhibit complex social patterns that include intricate communication skills, coalition formation, cooperation, cultural transmission and tool usage.”

The sperm whale, for example…has been found to live in large, elaborately structured societal groups, or clans, that typically number in the tens of thousands and wander over many thousands of miles of ocean… “It’s like they’re living in these massive, multicultural, undersea societies,” says Hal Whitehead…the world’s foremost expert on the sperm whale. “It’s sort of strange. Really the closest analogy we have for it would be ourselves.”

For seers, the whales can show us that: United we can support one another, awake or asleep, to move past fantasy or wishful thinking to actually travel the sea of awareness, to “dream,” bringing, alone and together, elements of our night dreams into our day and vice versa.

In this workshop, given in Amsterdam, a city built on the prowess of its great ocean navigators, we will practice:

The Whale Form: A special series of Tensegrity movements to get a glimpse of the profound, awe-inspiring awareness and highly evolved and enhancing social structure of the whales, helping us to mutually support each other as a community of dreamers;

Self-inquiry exercises that help us to track the flow of attention and energy in our dreams, making the bridge between our dreams at night and our everyday experience, identifying then new and more efficient ways to direct our attention and energy in both states;

The art of setting up dreaming – how each of us, individually, can creatively, purposefully and intentionally prepare for dreaming at night;

Specific and ongoing practical dreaming exercises, in both sleeping and waking awareness, aimed toward cultivating a specific individual dream of one’s personal choice, as well as dreaming together.

The art of Dreaming, which includes dreaming together, Carlos Castaneda said, is founded on the solitary journey of each practitioner. We are never alone in our journey-we are One, in that we all come from the same source, and we are intimately connected to the earth; our home star, the sun; the moon, planets, and the rest of the galaxy as well as to Spirit; yet each of us is alone in our practice, in that each of us must make the daily decision to direct our attention in enhancing ways, in dreams of both day and night. To support the individual growth of this art, and give it time and space to bloom, participants will be asked, at the beginning of the workshop, as they have been in various Tensegrity classes and workshops such as "Inner Silence," or "Sex, Gender, Power, Creativity," to indicate their agreement that they will share what they learn, hear and practice in the workshop only with other participants of this event.

Tensegrity is the modern practice of the warrior-traveler’s path with heart which don Juan Matus taught his four students: Carlos Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs. The word ‘tensegrity’ was coined by an architect, scientist, engineer, global thinker and dreamer whom Carlos Castaneda admired: R. Buckminster Fuller. Fuller described tensegrity as a process of tensional integrity—the inherent interdependence of structures such as cells, bodies, and solar systems which are held together by a continuous web of tension (such as gravity) holding together discontinuous islands of compression (such as the sun, planets and moons in the solar system).
    As a modern practice of shamanism, Tensegrity means adapting to our own energy, the energy of sun and stars, the air, water, the land, and of its inhabitants in a way that supports the interdependent integrity of the community that we are, as individual and collective beings. The tools that can help us to do this include the ancient energy-enhancing movements and breaths known as magical passes, as well as tracking and dreaming exercises, all of which we will do in this workshop.
    Tracking exercises are: guided self-examination exercises practiced individually and with a peer witness, which allow one to track not only our physical patterns, but also our related mental and emotional patterns and their consequential behaviors and judgments, which we inherited from our lineage and cultures.
    We can direct the energy and awareness gained from this review to access what don Juan Matus called freedom of perception—the freedom to move past any limiting interpretations of our lineage, upbringing and culture to perceive energy directly, and to dream true interdependence—new possibilities of working with others and with the earth–wherever we are, possibilities which spring from an open heart, from bringing one’s best to the interchange.
