Carlos Castaneda’s Tensegrity

A One-day Workshop

Breaking the Speed Barrier*

October 16, 2010

London, United Kingdom

For the seers of don Juan’s lineage, there is the cognition of modern man, and there is the cognition of the shamans of ancient Mexico. Don Juan considered these two to be entire worlds of everyday life which were intrinsically different from one another.

- Carlos Castaneda

According to the seers of ancient Mexico, the speed with which we do, think, react and interact, acts as a measure of cognition.

In many instances, the faster we go, the briefer the intake from our environment, the more mono-dimensional and tunneled become our thoughts, and the more fragmented becomes our cognition, leaving us in the end with energy that looks like fine, scattered particles of dust.

At another extreme, our habitual speed limits us in another way – we respond to our environment far too slowly; we ‘miss the boat,’ or hold things up; our energy becomes inert and stagnant, and we approach the events of our lives with a trepidation and tentativeness that impedes a decision of which direction to go.

According to seers, if we can learn to move with awareness – issues with ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ slip away, and we enter into the cognition of the seers of ancient Mexico as it applies to now, energetically experiencing a cohesion of being, which the students of don Juan refer to as Tensegrity.

In this one-day workshop, participants will practice Tensegrity – magical passes, or movements and breaths, that move us through differing speeds and rhythms, and self-inquiry exercises that help us identify who in our past gave us the ‘green light’ to speed up, or the ‘red light’ to slow down – all as an aid to breaking our current speed, whatever it is, that binds our cognition.

* Additionally, this workshop will contain a 'dreaming sequence' - once our energy has been stirred and loosened by the prior activities of kinesthetic movement and self-inquiry exercises - as a group in a different state of cognition, we will perceptually see where it is that we can go!

Tensegrity is the modern practice of the warrior-traveler’s path with heart which don Juan Matus taught his four students: Carlos Castaneda, Florinda Donner-Grau, Taisha Abelar and Carol Tiggs. The word ‘tensegrity’ was coined by an architect, scientist, engineer, global thinker and dreamer whom Carlos Castaneda admired: R. Buckminster Fuller. Fuller described tensegrity as a process of tensional integrity—the inherent interdependence of structures such as cells, bodies, and solar systems which are held together by a continuous web of tension (such as gravity) holding together discontinuous islands of compression (such as the sun, planets and moons in the solar system).
As a modern practice of shamanism, Tensegrity means adapting to our own energy, the energy of sun and stars, the air, water, the land, and of its inhabitants in a way that supports the interdependent integrity of the community that we are, as individual and collective beings. The tools that can help us to do this include the ancient energy-enhancing movements and breaths known as magical passes, as well as tracking and dreaming exercises, all of which we will do in this workshop.
Tracking exercises are: guided self-examination exercises practiced individually and with a peer witness, which allow one to track not only our physical patterns, but also our related mental and emotional patterns and their consequential behaviors and judgments, which we inherited from our lineage and cultures.
We can direct the energy and awareness gained from this review to access what don Juan Matus called freedom of perception—the freedom to move past any limiting interpretations of our lineage, upbringing and culture to perceive energy directly, and to dream true interdependence—new possibilities of working with others and with the earth–wherever we are, possibilities which spring from an open heart, from bringing one’s best to the interchange.
